Drama, Heartbreak as Merciless Former Mathare United Forward Rescues Wazito

Image result for derrick onyangoStriker Derrick Onyango scored in the second half for Wazito to deny his former side Mathare United victory in their Kenyan Premier League match played on Saturday at Kasarani Stadium.

Mathare United had just restored their first-half lead courtesy of Kevin Kimani, when Derrick headed home a Paul Acquah header following a corner kick taken by Victor Ndinya. That was in the 70th minute and a spectacular show by the Moneybags who had come from down twice in the match.

In the 49th minute, Kimani scored from a Crispin Oduor cross for Mathare United’s second goal forcing Wazito to fight harder for the equalizer-which came with head coach Fred Ambani watching the match from the stands.

He had been shown red-card by the Centre Referee and sent to the stands for mouthing in the first-half, the 37th minute to be precise, following an altercation with the Fourth Official which occurred just after they equalized the first goal courtesy of Victor Ndinya.

Speaking after the match, Wazito assistant coach Hamisi Muhammed, who stood in for Ambani, said he is always ready to step-up whenever need be like it was on Saturday.

“We did not expect the coach (Fred Ambani) to be sent packing but all was not lost because everyone on the technical bench is equal to the task,” Hamisi said.

“I think my players played a very good game and showed a proper character for coming from behind to register a draw against Mathare United,” he added.

On his side, a frowning Mathare United head coach Salim Ali complained about Wazito’s first goal but admitted that his boys played a good game. That, for him, the draw is a win having gone five matches unbeaten.

“It has been a very tactic match. A very good game. We started off well and finished well. For me, it is a win because we are still unbeaten. Am satisfied with the result even if I feel that their first goal was clearly offside,” he said.

Mathare United’s opener was an own goal by Wazito’s Bernard Ochieng’ in the 27th minute.
