Arsenal played out a 1-1 draw with Manchester United at Old Trafford on Monday night. The Gunners were the favorites heading into this tie especially considering Manchester United’s poor form this season that has seen them win just twice in the league.

However, the Gunners went behind in the first half and had to be bailed out again by Pierre Emerick Aubameyang who coolly slotted home in the second half. He has now scored over half of Arsenal’s goals this season.

Below, we look at some of the mistakes Arsenal manager Unai Emery made in the disappointing draw.

3 defensive midfielders

Unai Emery started Granit Xhaka, Matteo Guendouzi, and Lucas Torreira as his midfield trio. All three are defensive-minded which left Arsenal’s attackers disjointed from the rest of the team.

Lucas Torreira was asked to play as the most advanced midfielder and he struggled all night as he is not an attacker by nature. Leaving Mesut Ozil out without any explanation was poor decision making and could cost him his job.

The Scottish left-back was left out of the matchday squad despite playing and impressing against Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup win over Nottingham Forest. He is a proper left-back who offers a lot going forward and is very switched on defensively.

Unai Emery missed a trick by not starting him.

After starting brightly and even getting the equalizer in the second half, Arsenal reverted to playing defensive football and could have lost the match late on.

The team should have pushed on for the win after the equalizer but the manager was not having any of that. He needs to be more ambitious or he could face the sack very soon.
