Vetting of County Ministers Ongoing in Nandi County

A candidate undergoing vetting at Nandi County Assembly.

The search for suitable candidates for county executive and county Secretary positions in Nandi County began on Wednesday with four nominees being vetted by the Nandi County Assembly appointing committee.

Dr Philemon Bureti (Lands, Environment Natural Resources, Water and Sanitation), Drice Rono (Transport and Infrastructure), Grace Sugut (Education) and Dr Francis Sang (County Secretary) appeared before the seven-member panel to have their credentials checked and their suitability for the posts tested.

Bureti, who was the first to face the panel, was tasked to explain how and where he acquired his academic qualifications.

This came after a member questioned how he obtained his doctorate degree in a span of two years yet he had no reputable published journals.

In his response, Dr Bureti informed the committee that the regulations to have published journals for one to be awarded a PhD came in 2013 after he had long graduated in 2003.

The chair of the committee Speaker Joshua Kiptoo ordered the nominee to deliver the required documents together with his identity card to the committee for further interrogation.

Eng. Rono, the nominee for Transport and Infrastructure told the committee that he will be able to rectify the anomalies committed by his predecessors in one month, having gained a wealth of experience at his former employment as a public works engineer in Samburu County.

“I will employ my acquired skills and follow laid procedures to ensure the department moves in the right direction,” said Rono.

The nominee for education has an uphill task since the department has on two occasions been marred with misappropriation of funds and poor workmanship, especially for the ECD classes.

The chair pointed out that the committee will also vet six members for the county public service board on Thursday and Friday, before submitting the report for consideration in two weeks’ time.

The positions for the CECs Transport, Lands and Education fell vacant after the two former CEC’s resigned, while the governor dismissed the former CEC for education, Valentine Chumo.

Earlier, investigations into the theft and loss of property at the education and transport departments revealed leadership and management lapses leading to underperformance which necessitated the restructuring.
