Angry Mob Descend on 3 Believed Con Artists

Three suspected con artists are nursing serious wounds at Nyeri County Referral Hospital after an irate mob descended on them with pangas at Mathakwa-ini area in Tetu Sub-County, Nyeri yesterday.

The trio among them two women were allegedly giving free mobile lines from one of the service providers when one of their clients realized she had been swindled.

According to Tetu Sub –County Police Commander Isaiah Wambia, the suspects were moving around the village pretending they were giving out free lines to the villagers.

Wambia said they would request the unsuspecting client to reveal M-pesa PIN particulars and the suspects who posed as agents of the service provider would withdraw cash from the client’s phone account.

The police commander added: “One customer Ann Wangechi Nduta realized her Sh5, 000 had been withdrawn and raised an alarm attracting other members of the public.”

He said knowing that their mission had been exposed, the three who were travelling in a Toyota Probox registration number KCB 097C spend off but the vehicle rolled in a sharp corner and the public cornered them.

Wambia said the irate mob descended on them with pangas inflicting serious injuries on them but quick action by police officers saved their lives.

The commander added that the suspects sustained head and hand injuries and were rushed to a nearby health facility for first aid before being transferred to Nyeri County Referral Hospital where they are guarded.

He cautioned the public to be aware of such swindlers and desist from disclosing their M-pesa pin details to second parties.

The police boss said there were reports of similar incidents where two people lost Sh10, 000 and 15,000 respectively. Wambia said the suspects would be arraigned in court after their conditions improve.
