5 Arrested for Brutally Assaulting Chiefs & Freeing Chang’aa Dealers

Five out of the 10 people alleged to have freed two chang’aa dealers after they were nabbed by two Chiefs at Cheptalal area Konoin, Bomet, have been arrested.

One was arrested on Friday while others were nabbed on Saturday as Bomet police intensified the manhunt for the suspects who assaulted the chiefs leaving them with injuries.

The administrators, Philip Chelule of Sotit and his Toboino counterpart, Joel Mutai, suffered multiple head injuries and have been admitted at Longisa County Referral hospital.

Other suspects are thought to have fled to neighbouring counties but Bomet County Commissioner Geoffrey Omonding’ assured the government would not stop until all the fugitives were brought to book.

Omonding’ stated that the suspects acted in the manner hinting they had the backing of the area police, who he said have been compromised to allow illegal trade in illicit drugs.

“It is, unfortunately, true that some police officers have been tipping off the brewers of planned raids by our administrators,” he admitted.

“Those found guilty of this shall face disciplinary measures for undermining Government programmes. This is a very serious issue,” he added.

Omonding’ said the Chiefs, who had been left to work on their own, managed to recover 30 litres of chang’aa and 30 packs of Supermatch cigarettes meant for export, which were illegally sold locally.

The commissioner indicated those in custody would be prosecuted to serve as warning to other potential offenders.
