The Teacher Service Commission (TSC) has defended the teacher accused of shaming a student over menses, which led her to commit suicide two weeks ago.

TSC said in a preliminary report on Friday that the teacher offered to help the student- Jackline Chebet – who had soiled her school uniform by offering her pads and asking her to go home and change.

TSC CEO Nancy Macharia in a statement addressed to the Clerk of the National Assembly said: “The teacher did not scold or ridicule the student for soiling her uniform”.

TSC stated that the Standard Six pupil left the school compound as her class teacher, who has since been suspended, headed to the office to get her pads.

“While the teacher walked towards the office to get for the pads Jackline walked towards the gate and went home straight. When the teacher finished the inquiry on the whereabouts of the towels, she spotted Jackline walking towards the gate. Her efforts to call her back were unsuccessful,” TSC said.

A team formed by TSC to investigate the matter established that when the student reached home, her mother instructed her to wash, change her uniform and return to school which she complied.

“She obeyed, picked a bucket and ‘leso’ and went to the river. At around 2.00 pm word reached her family that she had committed suicide,” TSC said.

The mother and relatives of the pupil told Journalists that the pupil hanged herself out of shame for being humiliated by her teacher.

Additionally, the team established that the school had received sanitary towels for the second term from the government and that it had supplied all the eligible girls with the same including Jackline.

TSC promised to take further action based on the findings of the report.
