A mother was left in agony after she lost her twin babies hours after delivery at the Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital.

The woman identified as Mercyline Ongachi was left shocked after it was revealed that her children were placed in a carton instead of an incubator at Mama Lucy Hospital.

According to reports Ongachi had been rushed to the facility after she began experiencing premature labour pains. Further information highlighted that the 20 year-old was forced to deliver the first child without the assistance of the nurses.

According to Amnesty International who pleaded her case, Ongachi was neglected after a medical expert attended to another patient despite the discomfort experienced by the mother.

“When she got to Mama Lucy, she was admitted immediately. The ward where she was had another pregnant patient who was also in labour,”

“After minutes of screaming for help, a health worker walked in but attended to the other patient first, forcing Mercyline to deliver alone,” remarked Sandra Mwarania who is a health rights activist.

Mwariani disclosed that the nurses had no knowledge that Ongachi was expecting twins.

The health rights activist affirmed that the health workers made no attempt to save the lives of the babies and only explained that the children born at six months could not survive.

In September 2018, 12 bodies of infants were discovered in cartons at Pumwani Hospital.

The bodies were found after Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko paid a surprise visit to the facility and unearthed the corpses.

Five of the bodies were placed in plastic bags while six others were stuffed in medical supply boxes. Another lay in a cardboard box. All the 12 infants had been identified with tags on their wrists.

The hospital’s management had been temporarily suspended by the County boss in a bid to allow investigations into the matter to be conducted.
