Football star McDonald Mariga has shocked the public follwing his decision to contest for the vacant Kibra constituency seat on a Jubilee Party ticket.
The seat fell vacant following the death of Ken Okoth who succumbed in August after a long battle with Cancer.
Mariga, brother to Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Victor Wanyama and once a player under Jose Mourinho, announced his participation in the election last week. The former Harambee Stars midfielder currently serves as the face to betting company Betin Kenya and there are concerns over his suitability for the role as he is not a known Kibra native.
He has already been handed a direct ticket by the ruling party Jubilee and stated that he is vying because he feels he has a lot to give to the people of Kibra and understands most of their problems.
The move obviously attracted lots of reactions from Kenyans. Below, we sample some of them.s
Mariga has taken a wrong turn… He was a love to kenyans now he will have his dirty linen washed in public…. Footballers who retire go to become coaches or such…. Politics tuachie George Weah pekee

He has fallen flat on his stomach. Kicking the ball and running around the field does not translate into political leadership…He should concentrate on building his career and leave politics to politicians #k24sportshub

#k24sportshub I think it’s a good move if at all he is gonna give back to the community as he promised. He can as well use that position to promote Kenyan sport

He will just embarrass himself..The respect that we had for him in representing Kenya on foreign soils as a footballer will be lost and it will be forgotten

Wrong move. His career in football was bigger and better. I believe more can be done to empower the talented football youngsters and not politics
