Kenyans online have criticised the decisions by a section of Kikuyu elders saying that those who want to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta will have to wait before being endorsed by the elders.
Speaking on Saturday, the elders said they were not in support of any candidate, saying those already fronting themselves were doing it without the community’s blessings.
Led by Kiambu county elders chairman Nditu wa Gitau popularly known as OJ, the elders dismissed claims that Mt Kenya people have been divided in support of some leaders declaring themselves to take over after Uhuru.
OJ’s sentiments were seen to be directed at DP William Ruto who has already strategize himself to succeed Uhuru in 2022 with the aid of Mt. Kenya rich vote.
“We want to remain united and we support leaders who are already in office. We shall wait until President Uhuru gives us political direction on who will succeed him” Gitau said.
Leaders’ remarks, however, were interpreted by some online users as politically driven. According to the views of those who criticized their sentiments, the elders were not necessarily representing the views of Central Kenya people but rather the interests of some few politicians who were out to dismantle William Ruto’s 2022 bid.
