Inside Kenyan School That Once Served as a Torture Camp

A school in Nyeri County might not be popular, but few are aware that it once used by the British as a detention and torture camp during the colonial rule.

Mweru High School, served as one of the detention places used by the British military to hold the Mau Mau fighters and brutally torment them.

A small house-like structure within the compound of the school serves as evidence of the horrors that occurred at the place.

According to a sign embedded at the entrance of the house, it was termed as a “torture room” where many of the fighters lost their lives.

“They hated the injustice, they took the oath and went to the forest.

“They were detained, harassed and tortured. They died in here for our freedom,” reads the sign.

One of the survivors of the cruelty inflicted by the colonizers, Wambugu wa Nyingi, disclosed to BBC that he was among those held in the rooms in the camp referred to as Mweru Works Camp.

The veteran explained that he was held there for three months and was barred from communicating with outsiders.

The 91-year old further added that there were many similar rooms which were defined by no proper accommodation and a bucket which acted as a toilet.

Wambugu echoed that he had been moved from one camp to the other before he was set free.

In July 2012, the British government openly admitted that Kenyans were tortured during the Mau Mau uprising.

The confession came after three Mau Mau veterans took the European government to court over the alleged treatment by their forces.

Guy’s Mansfield QC, the British government’s defence lawyer, reiterated that the government believed the claim made by the Kenyans.

“I wish to make it clear before I cross-examine the three claimants that the defendant (the British Government) does not dispute that each of the claimants suffered torture and other ill treatment at the hands of the colonial administration,” stated Mansfield.
