The census process in Kenya has been said to start on the night of 24th August 2019 and continue up to the 31st August 2019 when counting is scheduled to end. People will be counted with reference to where they spend the night of 24th/25th August 2019. This is referred to as the Census Reference Night.

The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) director-general, Zachary Mwangi Chege, has said that Kenyans who won’t be at home on the nights of August 24 to August 31 will still be counted in the population census at the joints they would be in, including lodgings.

According to Mr Mwangi, those who will be counted away from home are categorised as non-conventional participants. Non-conventional participants include Kenyans in hotels, lodgings, people in transit, schools, hospitals, prisons, children’s homes, street urchins, immigrants, and detainees.

Kenyans are well known to have fun-filled weekends having some sleeping away from their houses. It has however been confirmed that even if you are in a lodging, you will be counted on the Census Day.

Kenyans were excited after learning about this and there were some reactions.
