How Liverpool rekindled their fantastic love story with the city of Istanbul

Liverpool loves a European night in the city of Istanbul. It was here where the team defied all odds to claim a 5th European crown against AC Milan in 2005.

Trailing 3-0 at half time, Rafa Benitez men looked dead and buried but they staged a memorable comeback in the space of 6 minutes to level the match. The manager made a half time substitution and the rest, as they say, is history.

Steven Gerrard got the first with a header, Vladimir Smicer added the second before Spanish midfielder Xavi Alonso completed the comeback.

The match went on to penalties and Liverpool won after their goalkeeper saved the last Milan penalty with his feet.

The script was almost the same in Liverpool’s Super Cup clash with Chelsea. The Blues were leading at half time but Liverpool made a halftime change bringing on Roberto Firmino for Oxlade Chamberlain. The move worked as they leveled matters and pushed the match into penalties where they won after their goalkeeper saved Chelsea’s last penalty with his feet.
