Sofapaka confirms departure of nine key players

Kenyan Premier League side, Sofapaka has confirmed the departure of eight key players ahead of the 2018/19 KPL season that kicks off at the end of the month.

Batoto Ba Mungu faced serious financial challenges during the 2018/19 Kenyan Premier League campaign and it’s for this season that some key players have walked out after going for months without pay.

Among those who have walked out is Burundian duo of Mousa Omar and Justin Ndikumana, forwards Pistone Mutamba and Mike Oduor who have since moved to big-spenders Wazito. Striker Steven Waruru who has joined KCB, Cliff Kasuti has moved to Bandari while midfielders Dennis Odhiambo and Ibrahim Kajuba asked to be released.

“I want to thank all the players for the service they have given to the team. They have been exceptional professionals even in the wake of the challenges we have faced and I want to laud them for the great service they have given to the club,” club president Elly Kalekwa told the club website.

“I am particularly pleased with Justin and Mousa because they were soldiers for the team. They gave their all and fought like this team was their blood and I want to wish them all the best in their future engagements,” he added.

Coach Francis Baraza thanked the players for their service to the club and wished them well in their future endeavors.

“Football is all about making progress and I feel happy that our players are moving on to greener pastures. As a coach, I want to thank them for the service they gave the team especially last season when we finished third. They gave me an easy time as a coach and I would want to wish them all the best in their new career paths”.

Ugandan striker Umaru Kasumba has since joined Zambian side, Zesco United after the expiry of his contract while Harambee Stars forward John Avire is angling for a move to Egyptian side FC Tanta.
