President Uhuru Kenyatta and ‘his brother’ Raila Odinga have been accused of championing for the referendum for their own selfish gains at the expense of the rest of Kenyans.

Former Machakos Senator Johnstone Muthama has reveled that Uhuru and Raila are using the referendum to push for the position of Prime Minister which Uhuru will occupy after retiring from the presidency in 2022 as the constitution cant allow him to take the presidency again while Raila vies for the presidency.

“The amendment of the constitution is aiming at two top government positions, that is of the Prime Minister and of the presidency that we have now. Uhuru is planning to use that opportunity to take the Prime Minister position after 2022 as the constitution cannot allow him to vie for the presidency again,” Muthama argued.

‘This country does not have enough money to support satisfy the political class,” he added.

Muthama now wants Kenyans to reject the push for constitutional changes if it is aimed at creating more political seats as the country does not need the creation of more political seats to satisfy the political class.

“If you ask me I will tell you that Kenyans do not want a referendum that is focused on creating jobs for the political class,” he said.

On Monday, the BBI team refuted media claims that it has already agreed for the country to hold a referendum.

The committee said it is still collecting and compiling views from Kenyans and will hand over its final report to President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga in October.

The Haji led committee assured Kenyans that its final report will not be influenced by politicians.
