The outstanding detail on Trippier’s move to Atletico Madrid

England and Tottenham Hotspurs right-back, Kieran Trippier has completed a £20m move from the club to Atletico Madrid which is undoubtedly one of the most surprising moves of this summer’s transfer window and for England history.

Trippier, 28 England international signed a three-year deal for Diego Simeone’s side who finished second in the Laliga log.

His last game for Tottenham as it now turns out was in last month’s Champions League final defeat to Liverpool in Madrid, a game played at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium, the home of his new club, Atletico Madrid.

One of the most outstanding factors about the Hotspur defender, Kieran Trippier is that he is the first English player in 95 years to play for Atletico Madrid, as claimed by El Mundo Deportivo.

The report has it that the previous player from England to play for the club was a forward named Drinkwater in the 1923/24 season, of which “there are hardly any historical references beyond which he played three games and scored ten goals.”

Apart from players, there have been a number of English managers at Atletico, Vince Hayes managed the side in the same campaign as Drinkwater, while Walter Harris, Fred Pentland, Colin Addison and Ron Atkinson also took charge of the team.

Trippier saw his form at Spurs stagnate last season and the club is said to have opened him for sale which allowed them to reinvest and bring in new faces in their squad.

Trippier joined Spurs from Burnley in June 2015 and played more than 100 times for the London club to become a reliable player for the Mauricio Pochettino-led side helping them reach the Champions League finals.

A number of defenders are leaving Atletico this summer with the departures of Lucas Hernandez, Diego Godin and Juanfran Torres having all been confirmed, meaning Trippier is likely to be a direct replacement for the latter.
