Just how safe are our children in boarding schools? A disturbing story is making headlines of  a 15 year old boy who is a form two student at Nairobi School who is a victim of severe assault.

The boy is alleged to have been assaulted because he did not have a tie.

He is completely disorientated that he cannot remember even his siblings not even his name.

The student physical and mental condition have led him to be withdrawn from the school.

A consultant radiologist reported that the boy has fluid build up in the brain that needs a very urgent surgery.

That condition is known as Hydrocephalus. That is the restriction of the celebrospinal fluid. The condition makes some body parts not to function properly.

Nairobi School has denied those allegations but the Ministry of education has begun investigation. Led by Headteacher Caspal Maina, they stated that the student left the school on Sunday while in a better condition contrary to what the parents are reporting.

The news was broke through a parent  WhatsApp group where the parents are complaining of the devastating state of the assaulted boy.

The parent also stated that the Prefect who assaulted him is believed to be untouchable.

However some Female legislators have jumped on the defense of the parents of the assaulted Nairobi School student.

“If indeed we were able to say teachers cannot cane then why allow prefects to be ‘untouchable’ and be able to do anything to students?” she asked.

Governance Expert, Bessie Kathambi has stated that the schools need to evaluate the type of people they put in leadership positions. She insisted on change of Prefect systems.

“There is need to change the prefects’ system; we need to check the kind of people we are putting in as leaders It is not right that the leaders, as young as they are, can get to be hooligans,” Kathambi stated.

This comes as the Ministry of Education is planning to send spies in schools in efforts to curb such incidences.
