The incident that involved a form 2 student at Nairobi school who was allegedly beaten by prefects is just one among many cases in Kenyan high schools. Bullying in most Kenyan schools have been ongoing for a while now and nothing much seems to be done. What people do not understand is that at no particular situation should a student be given a right to beat up another because parents are not raising beasts but children/students.

As much as the prefects have been assigned duties to help oversee that things run smoothly, they should not let power not get into their heads.

Monday’s incident at Nairobi school suddenly took a dark turn after the form two student that was battered, now has to undergo brain surgery. The school management should learn from the scenario and restrain from picking high testosterone boys as prefects because that has proven to make things worse.

Most Kenyan teachers give too much power to prefects because they don’t want to monitor the students themselves, now see what has happened! The school, on the other hand, is denying any responsibility like the boy was beaten by a ghost. Leadership does not give a right to oppress the minor, I think the power given to school prefects is becoming toxic.

It’s very shameful and disturbing to hear an outdated behaviour (bullying) is going on in a school at the heartbeat of Kenya capital Nairobi, bullying is a past tense even in our jails. Kenyans are demanding an explanation from Nairobi school management, and request that they be held accountable.

The school just like any other national school has its prefect bullying instances come to light. The truth is most National schools have prefects beating up students. Alliance was in the light 2 years ago, Maseno is a common culprit. What do you think should be done to curb this growing rogueness?

Below were some reactions from Kenyans on the alleged bullying at Nairobi school;

If you were the parent to the boy, what action would you have taken? Shoud some powers be given to fellow students?
