3 Dead, Dozens Injured as Lorry overturns in Elgeyo-Marakwet

Three people have been confirmed dead with 16 others injured after a lorry ferrying construction workers overturned at Kamuseny area of Marakwet West sub-county in Elgeyo Marakwet county.

The lorry which belongs to a China construction company was ferrying workers to the construction site when it lost control and overturned along the meandering road. Confirming the report, area OCPD Mr. Kiamba said three people died instantly with the 16 injured workers being rushed to Kapsowar mission hospital for treatment.

It is not yet clear what caused the accident but police have started investigations into the accident. It is however highly suspected that the meandering terrain in the region could have contributed to the deadly accident.

KIU Construction Company from China was in 2010 awarded the contract to upgrade the 12-km stretch Iten-Burgar road but the company had taken time to complete the road.

The road is an essential link and economic road in the county and connects Iten, the county headquarters with Marakwet West, Marakwet East sub-counties and Uasin Gishu county.

It is part of Nyaru-Iten and Cheptongei-Kapenguria Road, which is set to ease the transport crisis in the North Rift. Most disadvantaged during bad weather are tomato and mango farmers

Nyaru, Iten road is currently under construction and it is expected that by December 2019, all the construction works will be completed.
