The United States of America women’s football team saw off their Dutch counterparts 2-0 to retain the FIFA Women’s World Cup crown. The victory ensured that the USA become the first team to defend the World Cup and are the record winners of the title with 4 wins, 1991, 1999, 2015 and 2019.
The Americans dominated the match from start to finish but could not find a way past a resolute Dutch defense led by the excellent Stefanie Van der Gragt. The Champions went ahead on the hour mark following a VAR awarded penalty that was duly converted by the Tournament’s top scorer Megan Rapinoe.
Barcelona defender Stefanie van der Gragt’s high boot caught USA striker Alex Morgan and French referee Stephanie Frappart pointed to the spot after assessing replays, and the holders did not look back after taking the lead.
Rose Lavelle added a second with a brilliant run and finish just8 minutes later to end anyDutch hopes of a comeback. The USA should’ve added to their advantage were it not for Sari Van Veenendaal’s brilliance in the Netherlands goal. Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe guilty of missing clear cut chances.
Rapinoe won the Golden boot while Alex Morgan had to settle for the Silver Boot.
