Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has been summoned over a militia that the DCI has referred to as ‘Sonko Defence Force’ allegedly linked him.

In a letter dated June 7, 2019, the DCI summoned the flamboyant governor to have a listed MCAs assistance in shedding light the existence of the militia.

“This office (DCI) is conducting an investigation into the alleged existence of a militia by the name of SONKO DEFENCE FORCE.

“To this end, this office would like to request your good office’s assistance in summoning the undermentioned honourable members so that they may shed light on what they know about the alleged militia,” read the letter in part.

The MCAs whom the DCI has summoned include Anthony Kiragu Karanja (Waithaka) Ruth Ndumi(nominated) and Patricia Mutheu (Mlango Kubwa).

In a rejoinder, Sonko disowned the militia group claiming that the Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho is using his office to intimidate him politically with threats.

“I wish to categorically deny claims of the existence of a militia by the name of Sonko Defence Forces. This is yet another attempt to divert the attention of Nairobians and by extension Kenyans from real issues to be substituted with petty politics of intimidation and threats”.

Sonko went on to defend his record saying that has been recognised for his initiatives that have helped reform many young people in Nairobi.

“I have been in the forefront in rehabilitation and transformation of our youths involved in crime in Nairobi ever since I was an MP. Some have gone through rehabilitation centres and are currently working in the Nairobi City beautification program,” read a part of his post.

Last month during the Labour Day celebrations, a group carrying a banner and donned in t-shirts labelled Sonko Defence Forces (SDF) interrupted the function after making their way into Uhuru Park running, shouting and blowing whistles as presentations by entertainment groups were ongoing.
