Sex is meant to be fun as always. However, things can take a turn when you are just after a heavy satisfying session with your man, only for either of you to spot a couple of red stains on the sheets….or table, if you’re that kind of girl wink*.
Of course, if the lady was a virgin, it would be understandable because of well….. nature.
It’s only natural that one becomes worried after they find out they were bleeding during sex. There could be a number of reasons why this could be happening.
1. Contraception
A new pill, missed pills, or a change in contraception could lead to unexpected bleeding, but don’t just assume this is the case and move on. It’s still a good idea to get it checked out.
2. STI
Also, unexpected bleeding either after sex or in between your period can be a sign of a sexually transmitted infection. It’s a good idea to get it checked out promptly to exclude infections such as Chlamydia or Gonorrhoea.
3. Sensitive skin
Sometimes the skin on the cervix can become very thin and bleed on contact.
4. Pregnancy
Early pregnancy can also be a cause of unexplained bleeding. So, if you notice spotting during sex or between periods, do a test as soon as you can.
5. Menopause
So, if you’re expecting to hit the menopause soon, or are already there, this could well be the cause of the bleeding.
6. Cervical cancer
It’s important to do an examination to check the appearance of the cervix and stay up-to-date with smear tests.
7. Endometriosis
Some women with endometriosis may report irregular bleeding or spotting, but this is not usually the predominant feature of endometriosis. It’s important to exclude other more common causes of irregular bleeding before attributing unexpected bleeding to endometriosis.
If you do experience any bleeding during, or after, sex or between periods don’t just brush it off. There are a lot of other reasons why women may bleed after sex. It’s important to see a doctor who can offer you an examination and some tests to look into why the bleeding is occurring.
