Waititu grilled for hours over 35 properties, tourist hotels and the controversial Ksh 500m

Image result for ferdinand waitituEACC sleuths spent hours questioning Kiambu governor over the acquisition of massive wealth since he shifted his politics from Nairobi to Kiambu. Waititu is alleged to have acquired massive wealth that even according to him, he says if Kenyans knew the exact amount he has some would run mad.

However the question is not about the properties, it is how he acquired them that is raising eyebrows across the investigation departments. Police are trying to find how the Punjab graduate managed to acquire land worth billions, multi-million properties yet corruption loopholes in the county he manages are so evident.

Popularly known as Bab yao, Waititu is under fire after reports emerged that he awarded tenders in a manner contrary to the constitution, worth Sh588 million to companies associated with himself and his immediate family members. The Kiambu Governor is also on the spot over the fraudulent acquisition of public funds, conflict of interest and money laundering.

Kiambu Deputy Governor James Nyoro accused his boss, Governor Ferdinand Waititu, of overseeing a corrupt and an incompetent administration that has been allegedly milking the county treasury dry.

Waititu is also faced with the controversial rehabilitation programme dubbed Kaa sober, which gobbled up Sh2 million on a daily basis yet it did not have the approval of the county assembly, an alleged illegal transfer of grants amounting to over Sh1 billion shillings, stalled projects and World Bank money.

After the grilling which lasted close to 10hrs Waititu dwell on his innocence, saying no money has been looted under his watch and that he owns real estate companies where he and his daughter Monica Njeri Ndung’u are signatories.A file photo of Dr Monica Njeri Ndung'u

Monica Njeri Ndung’u has been termed a person of interest in the investigations.

“She is integral in this investigations as she appears to be controlling the family transactions, ” a detective, who requested not to be named, said.

Dr Njeri is a graduate of Medicine and Surgery from the University of Nairobi (class of 2014).

Njeri previously worked at Kenyatta National Hospital before she switched in December 2017 when she was employed by the Kiambu County government and deployed to Gatundu Level 5 Hospital where she is a senior doctor.

The EACC is looking at 35 properties, which include luxury mansions that the governor is constructing in Runda, the Delta Hotel building situated in Nairobi CBD worth billions of shillings and a luxurious tourist hotel in Naivasha, to establish whether they were acquired through corruption or through proceeds of the vice.

When police raided his two homes in Kiambu county, investigators said crucial documents indicating transfer and ownership of properties were recovered and that they could play a big role in the probe.

“This investigation has many dimensions involved and the involvement of several persons of interest. Although it might take a while to be concluded, we will fast track the probe to the best of our abilities, ” EACC chief executive officer Twalib Mbarak said.Image result for Ms Harrison along Mpaka Road in Nairobi

Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has also been trailing various officials from the Kiambu County government after receiving complaints of money laundering and suspect dealings.
The trail resulted in the dramatic chase and arrest on April 29 Ms Harrison along Mpaka Road in Nairobi.
During the arrest, Ms Harrison was found with fake US dollars while driving a double cabin car with GK number plates instead of county government registration.
