Inter-religious fight in Kiamaiko left young boy dead

The recent religious fight in Kiamaiko village between Christian and Muslim has left families in agony after a police officer shot dead a young boy who wasn’t part of the group.

Human Rights Activists are appealing for justice for the boy while another was left nursing bullet injuries.

Human rights groups, the Independent Policing Oversight Authority among other stakeholders say cases of human rights violations by security agencies remain prevalent.

Amina Mohamed a rights activist in Kiamaiko claims that an officer only known to them as Guyo allegedly killed a boy last week during a religious clash between Muslims and Christians in the area.

More than 200 people were arrested in the chaos and arraigned at the Makadara Law Courts.

The 2019 Economic Survey shows that the total number of murder cases registered increased from 956 in 2017 to 1,065 in 2018.  This represents an 11 percent rise or 109 more people murdered than the previous year.

The report notes that the registered murder cases in 2018 varied across High Court stations with the highest number being recorded in Eldoret. The last time the country registered more than 1000 murders in a year was in 2014.

“The number of persons reported to the police to have committed crimes increased by 5.1 percent to 75,037 in 2018, of which Kiambu police command station had the highest share at 8.4 percent followed by Nairobi City at 8.3 percent,” the report adds.

According to IMLU statistics, 822 people died from police bullets between 2013 and June 2018.

Of these, 58 happened between January and June this year.

IMLU acting program coordinator Carol Tannen says of these are cases of summary executions, people killed during ‘protection’ of the property while others lost their lives under unclear circumstances.
