Their form not been great and literally no one gave them a chance heading into the final match of the season. Chemelil Sugar, without a win from their last 8 matches has however defied all odds and avoided the dreaded relegation playoff tie with a 1-0 win over Sony Sugar at the Chemelil Complex.

Francis Baraza’s side had to win and hope that one of Posta Rangers and Zoo Kericho dropped points in the final day of the Kenya Premier League season. Well, the football gods were surely on Chemelil’sside as both teams dropped points. Rangers fell to Tusker at Ruaraka while Zoo Kericho blew a 2 goal lead to draw with KCB in the other relegation-deciding match.

A tense first half ended goalless but Chemelil were clearly the better side early on dominating possession but could not turn it into goals. The home side would, however, make their dominant display count 20 minutes from time when a cleanly taken goal broke the deadlock, much to anyone associated with the club’s relief.

Chemelil held on to record the all-important victory and can now look ahead to playing in next season’s top flight league. Posta Rangers were beaten 2-1 and will now have to contend with a playoff tie against the 3rd best team from the National Super League.
