Why Ruto’s Backlash in His Background Is an Early Sign His 2022 Irrelevance

Deputy President William Ruto, unlike any other 2022 presidential hopeful, is facing the most serious backlash in the country including his own background.

Amid his spirited bid, there appears to be an uprising against the prospect of his presidency in his Rift Valley yard.

Unlike Raila Odinga who commands near-total influence in his Luo Nyanza backyard, Ruto continues to face strong opposition from leaders from the vote-rich Kalenjin nation.

With every passing day, it is becoming clear that ensuring that the Kalenjin votes go into his basket is a pipe dream.

Kalenjin leaders opposing him wield significant influence to dent his 2022 chances.

Baringo Senator Gideon Moi has expressed the intention to run for the presidency which means he will be up against DP Ruto.

The Kalenjin communities residing in Baringo like Njemps, Pokot and Tugenare likely to vote for Gideon Moi, denying Ruto a section of the votes.

Buzeki, who caused jitters during Jubilee’s 2017 nomination battle, has publicly ditched the governing party over claims of being short-changed.

Joshua Kutuny has been moving around the country with other members of the so-called Kieleweke movement preaching against the deputy president.

Uasin Gishu Governor Mandago has been conspicuously absent in DP Ruto’s entourage that has been moving around the country, raising questions about where his loyalties lie.

There is no doubt that the DP does not enjoy total support from Rift Valley and the groundswell of opposition in his backyard speaks to, if anything, his waning influence.
