EACC detectives investigating Governor Ferdinand Waititu were on Thursday left baffled after they found out that bank accounts ran by the governor were nearly all empty.

These foundings were in contrast with Waititu’s recent remarks were he said he was so wealthy.

The detectives are now probing and piecing reports to determine whether Waititu colluded with friends and immediate family members to transact millions that he ha been accused of siphoning from the county government.

“We are on a trail to establish the unexplained wealth that he has amassed within the short period that he has been in office.

Reports indicate that Waititu has closely been monitored by the EACC over claims of acquiring mass wealth in the city of Nairobi and other regions in the country since he took over the governorship of Kiambu county.

On Thursday the detectives carried out a raid operation in his two homes one in Runda, Kiambu and Garden estate, where they ransacked every corner for documents.

EACC chief executive officer Twalib Mbarak said they found crucial evidence linking Waititu to Sh588m irregular tenders, fraudulent acquisition of public funds, conflict of interest and money laundering.

The governor’s daughter Monica Njeri, a doctor at Kenyatta National Hospital, was a person of interest amid reports that millions of shillings were wired through her bank accounts.

The EACC said that there was cogent evidence that the governor was awarded the lucrative tenders through proxy firms fronted by himself and close members of his family.

“Preliminary investigations show that contractors paid monies to senior county officials, their companies or relatives through proxies,” EACC chief executive officer Twalib Mbarak said in a statement.

The governor was interrogated and later discharged after a Kiambu court granted him a Sh500,000 anticipatory bail. The court ordered Waititu to present himself alongside his lawyers to a police station immediately.
