How Kisii Boda boda operators are fighting corruption in transport sector

Kisii  Boda Boda operators have vowed to work hand in hand with President  Uhuru Kenyatta to fight against the menace of corruption in the country.

Speaking during the training of Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission on sensitization on corruption and unethical practices in the transport sector, they said they will be on the forefront to ensure zero tolerance to the vice.

Samwel  Atala Senior Education officer EACC appealed to the boda-boda operators to help the government fight corruption which tends to hinder the nation’s economic progress.

“We know that boda-boda operators are agents of change and we are educating them so that they can reach others at the grassroots level,” Atala said.

Atala asked the boda-boda operators to report any cases of corruption.  He said that stern action will be taken against police officers who will be found soliciting for bribes.

He was categorical that it is the responsibility of the public to report such acts. “Bodaboda operators should collaborate with us in the fight against corruption. This is the only way we can end this vice,” he observed.

At the same time, he appealed to the operators to work with law enforcement officers to tame rising criminal activities targeting operators.

Boda  Boda  Safety  Association of  Kenya,  National  Chairman Kevin Mubadi said that they want to change the image of the Bodaboda operators in the society.

“In order to fight corruption public should refuse to give or receive bribes to get services,” Mubadi said, noting that corruption derails development in the country.

He urged the operators to be careful with the passengers they ferry since some are criminals posing as commuters. He indicated that they have received several cases where bodaboda riders have been beaten up and robbed of their valuables.

He said through community policing, crime rates will go down and that every citizen has a role to play in ensuring security. Their sentiments were echoed by Kisii Boda Boda   Chairman Fred  Nunda who urged riders to abide by the law and report any problems.

The operators promised to report any corruption incident. The training also took place in Homabay, Migori and Nyamira counties.
