Governor Sonko exposed by MP in explosive telephone conversation

Nairobi County Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has been exposed in a leaked telephone conversation with a city member of parliament.

The Governor, in the recorded phone call with Embakasi South MP Julius Mawathe, is heard vehemently condemning the intended eviction of slum residents in Mukuru kwa Njenga in President Uhuru’s slum upgrading program.

Sonko, infuriated by the intended demolitions, said he would not allow a single Kenyan get displaced from Mukuru kwa Njenga. He stated that he is ready to die in defence of the slum dwellers.

“The County has not been involved. I have sent my legal advisor and we shall resist that demolition. We should not displace people. That is a crime against humanity, let’s consult widely,”  Sonko told the MP in the telephone conversation.

The angry Sonko held that there were Kenyans who have lived in the slum for more than fifty years and as such do not deserve being moved from their residence.

“Never allow any sort of demolition to happen. I will be the first person to die when the bulldozers come there. No negotiation. No eviction and no demolition. I am looking for the president,” maintained Sonko, urging Mawathe to mobilize Embakasi South residents and stand firm against any demolition.

Below is the full conversation between Governor Sonko, Hon. Mawathe and his lawyer. It is still not clear whether it is Sonko or Mawathe who recorded the calls.
