Residents of Kariokor have vowed not to move an inch  from their houses to pave way for  the urban renewal project by National Government and the County Government of Nairobi.

According to Kariakor Estate Resident  Association, the residents want ownership of their current houses first  saying Nairobi County Government did not build Kariokor  Estate and that  the houses were given  to them by the National Housing Corporation through loans.

Association Chairperson  Samuel Gikandi  says the loan was all paid but later Nairobi City County Government took over the management of the houses in Kariokor and has been imposing rate fees on them for more than 50 years now.

‘‘We want ownership of these houses  before then this houses belong to us and the County Government of Niarobi has no rights over them .. and we can also confirm that Kariokor is up to modern standards and is not bad.’’ Gikandi stated.

So far they have participated in three meetings with county government of Nairobi and  investors but nothing much has been discussed on the issue of ownership.

‘‘No need of upgrading this estate again it does not make sense. What we want the two governments to do  is renovation,’’ He added.
