Raila’s Daughter Fails First Big Test at Gor Mahia

Winnie Odinga

Regardless of what happens in the Mashemeji Derby, Gor are favorites to win the 2018/19 KPL title. This will be the fourth title for the club in past five seasons. Gor have also established themselves in Continental Football, reaching the Quarter Finals of the Prestigious CAF Confederations Cup this season.

There is no doubt that Gor are enjoying success on the pitch, but unfortunately, that has not been reflected in their bank accounts. Gor like all the other KPL teams is going through tough times financial times.

Gor has failed to capitalize on the fact that its the biggest Sports Entity in the country. The Club’s media department is just a mess. Early this year, Gor Mahia failed to capitalise on the signing of Legendary Kenyan Striker Denis Oliech.

Oliech is the biggest name in Kenyan Football. The club was supposed to use his brand to sell merchandise and rally more fans to the Stadium but nothing was done, Rachier, the club’s chairman, announced his capture with one picture taken using a smartphone.

Oliech would have been of more help the club as a brand, than even his dwindling football skills. They would have paid his salary from selling his jerseys.

Gor has just failed to sell its brand and huge following to corporates. That can be attributed to lack of a Competent Media Department, and we thought the club was addressing this challenge when Winnie Odinga was appointed the Head of Media and Communication in March.

Apart from being Raila’s daughter, Winnie holds a  Double Majors Degree in International Business and Corporate Communications from Philadelphia, United States.

Her first big test was to preside over the launch of the clubs new kits. But she failed terribly at it. Gor launched the kits on Saturday night. Nobody, including the mainstream media knew about it. We also doubt if Winnie was aware of this.

In pictures shared on social media, we have seen Rachier, captain Haron Shakava and a few officials holding the Macron Jerseys like its a CDF donation.

Clubs give a lot of attention to jerseys because they want fans to buy them. When you have a huge fanbase like Gor Mahia, selling Replica Jerseys can be a revenue goldmine.

With her expertise, Winnie would have advised the club to have the big players; Oliech, Kahata, Tuyisenge and Kipkirui model the new kits. But it seems Rachier does not take advice from the experts.

And just like that, Gor have bluffed another chance to make some money. Don’t be surprised when players sleep on cold benches at airports next season.
