Firebrand Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i Thursday gave an ultimatum to the deadly Kakamega gangs that have left 14 dead in under one month.

The CS was on a tour of the area following a public outcry by the county Governor Wycliffe Oparanya after a woman was killed and her husband and children maimed.

The gangs identified as 14 brothers and 42 brothers have terrorized Matungu Sub-county residents since September 2018, and police in the area have been at pains to contain the carnage.

Early May, Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya urged the new Police Inspector General to redeploy police in Matungu who had worked in the area for more than three years.

The governor said the police had developed lethargy over time and had taken a back seat in the fight against crime.

Thursday when IG Mutyambai and CS Matiang’i visited the Matungu killing fields, the CS floated a raft of measures to curb the deaths which have left residents in panic.

“We are going to look into the list and make sure that if you come from Nyamira, you will be deployed in Kwale or Garissa. This will help in improving our security,” Matiangi stated.

Matiang’i also revealed that the members of the criminal gangs terrorizing residents should surrender in two weeks or face the full force of the law.

“From tonight we are embarking on a major operation that must yield fruit.

“If you are part of this gang surrender to the police within 14 days,” he stated.
