Hotel where apprehended senator Malala was ambushed by DCI

Kakamega senator Cleophas Malala has reportedly been arrested by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations in Kisumu county. The detectives are questioning Malala and Mayoni Ward Rep Oduori over claims that they are linked to activities of criminal gangs in Matungu.

He was apprehended at sovereign Hotel, in what looked like an ambush as he left his phone behind.

A worker at the hotel who had the Senator’s phone stated that the officers walked into the premises and took the legislator with them.

“They did not state their reason for arresting him, and at this time we have no information on what could have led to his arrest,” the hotel representative stated on being contacted by journalists.

The government launched a major security operation in Matungu Sub-County following a series of killings that have left 18 people dead in a span of one month.

Making the announcement when he toured the troubled region, Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i said a contingent of General Service Unit (GSU) officers will be deployed to beef up security and boost the regular police numbers.

The development came as it emerged that six key suspects were arrested on Wednesday night among them a jailbird believed to be coordinating the attacks from Nairobi.

He was fished out from his hideout in the city.Dr Matiang’i, accompanied by Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai toured Kakamega and Vihiga counties to assess the security situation.
