When you see other families happy! Here are the simple rules they follow

Kenyans joined the rest of the World to celebrate the 25th International day of Family led by the Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Labour and Social Protection Amb. Ukur Yatani.

During the conference, it emerged that a family is a gift from God and the day is marked across the world to celebrate families and their roles to conserve the environment. A family is a special unit and when it is loved, promoted and protected, then it prospers.

To have a blissful family coexistence, here are a few tips shared by notable speakers during the Wednesday celebrations.

  • Teach your children the simple things when they are young, they will forever have it with them and with the generations to come
  • Listen to other people and know how to spot when someone is calling out for help even when they are not saying they need help.
  • There is a need to look deep within ourselves to find out the root cause of family problems, in order to stop and curb homicides and suicide through understanding and talking about mental health.
  • The man has to set rules of no tech gadgets during meal times and avoiding giving children gadgets because they are being moody or with tantrums.
  • To promote bonding, families need to set boundaries as to how much time each member is on the internet/phone. Set times to sit with each other without gadgets.
  • Family and Mental Health are inter-related. When a family member/friend look withdrawn or not the usual self, approach in the best possible way that the person can feel comfortable to talk. Be the person who LISTENS and empathizes.

  • Fathers should be available at home, to talk to his child, to ask how the day was, have someone on one conversation. Also to ensure that you earn respect through the way you treat their mother.
  • On Gender and Climate Justice, some roles (community, reproductive & productive) have already been allocated due to the customary way of doing things.
