Radical Malindi pastor charged with three criminal offences

Controversial Malindi televangelist Paul Makenzi was on Tuesday released on Sh500,000 cash bail after denying three charges of incitement and disobeying the law.

Mr Makenzi was charged with several offences before Chief Magistrate Julie Oseko, who gave him an alternative of Sh1 million bond with a surety of the same amount.

In April, the court granted detectives and officials of the Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) orders to detain Mr Makenzi for 21 days in order to complete investigation on incitement-related offences.

He allegedly incited the public against getting registered for Huduma Namba.

On Tuesday, Mr Makenzi was charged with charged with inciting Christians against Hindus, Buddhists and Muslims through his summons aired on Times TV.

The court also heard that he was found with cinema-topographic films intended to incite children against attending school.

He was allegedly found with the films at Good News International Church (GNIC) in Malindi on April 11.

Mr Makenzi faced another charge of having and distributing films to the public, which had not been examined and classified by the KFCB.

He was also charged with operating a filming studio and producing films without a valid film licence from the board.

The court heard that on April 11 at GNIC, he and others were found producing films for public consumption without registering as a filming agent and acquiring the licence.

In 2017, Mr Makenzi and his wife Joyce Mwikamba, who is now deceased, were charged with promoting radicalisation in their church.

The couple was also accused of failing to provide their three children with basic education and offering this education at the church.

The charge sheet stated that the two knowingly and unlawfully promoting extreme beliefs to facilitate ideological religious and social changes at their church in Furunzi, Malindi.

At that time, they were each released on Sh100,000 cash bail or Sh500,000 bond with a surety of the same amount.

The case will be mentioned on May 9.
