National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale has joined leaders who want investigative agencies to probe allegations that some Huduma Namba registration staff are demanding bribes to offer services.

This comes after reports that Huduma Namba agents in Nakuru County are demanding to be bribed by Wananchi before being registered.

The news was shared online by activist Shiko Kihika, who said that the agents are demanding from between Ksh50 to Ksh200.

This is the latest setback to befall the controversial NIIMS registration, with less than two weeks before the close of the whole process.

While speaking in Garissa town on Tuesday, Duale said he had received complaints from residents over the matter.

He said these are serious allegations that should not be allowed to thrive and a thorough investigation should be carried out and those found culpable sacked and prosecuted.

“This is outright sabotage of government services. The government has invested billions of shillings into this programme that is absolutely free. No one should pay a coin for it,” he said.

The Garissa Town MP called on chiefs, who are the registrars’ immediate supervisors, to closely monitor the progress of the exercise.

The Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (Supkem) chair Abdulahi Salat raised similar concerns during a security meeting held at Lantern Hotel in Garissa town, attended by regional commissioner Mohamed Birik.

It seems the government employed few agents or the agents present have not grasped the process.

According to a senior government official, Huduma Namba registration will not be extended beyond May 17.

Central Regional Commissioner Wilson Nyagwanga has warned that the government has no budget earmarked for extension of the programme after the deadline, which may lock out many Kenyans.

Nyagwanga urged all to enlist in the National Integrated Identity Management System, which they will use to access government services.
