South African graduate Sanelisiwe Mboto hasn’t had an easy life and for her to reach this far is a true testament of hard work and persistence.

The 22-year-old lost both of her parents at the age of 12 and her siblings were forced to take her under their wings.

According to Briefly.co.za, Mboto’s mother passed away during her birthday. This has remained etched in her mind for over one decade. “When my mother passed away, I was in grade seven.

She passed away on June, 15 2008, exactly a week after my birthday. Ever since that day, my entire life had changed,” she said.

While she was finishing her school, Mboto did not attain the required results to join university and that broke her. She redid the test but sadly failed again.

This time round, funds for her education also took a plunge. Mboto’s sisters did not give up and they kept pushing the student to keep working hard till she achieved her dream. She took a gap year and started working at a call centre in an attempt to save up for her studies.

Mboto joined Durban University of Technology (DUT) in 2016 and that was the beginning of great things.

“When I got to DUT, I was fueled with the hunger to succeed. For me attending every lecture and tutorial was of vital importance because I knew the sacrifices that I had made to earn a seat in this institution. I began to regain my confidence. At that moment I reminded myself that I was born to be great,” she said.

In her first year at school, Mboto achieved eight distinctions out of the 10 units she was doing. In her second year, she was shortlisted and chosen to participate in an exchange program that saw her study for a semester in Germany.
