Major talking points from the Kenyan Premier League weekend action

The Kenyan Premier League served up its fair share of thrills and upsets on match-day 28. AFC Leopards were comfortably beaten by Mathare United while both Gor Mahia and Sofapaka dropped points in. Here are the 3 main talking points from the Kenyan Premier League matchday 28-weekend action…

Umaru Kasumba for the golden boot?

The Sofapaka hitman scored as early as in the 1st minute to give Batoto Ba Mungu the initiative in their match against Tusker but of more importance to him was that it was his 16th goal of the season. He is now clear of his rival for this season’s golden boot Enosh Ochieng of Ulinzi who has 15 strikes to his name so far.

Kasumba could have added a few more bar for fantastic goalkeeping from the Tusker goalkeeper. Should he continue carving out goal scoring chances as he did against Tusker, then Umaru Kasumba will be crowned the best strike in the league come the end of the season.

Gor Mahia players feeling the fatigue?

Gor Mahia’s draw with Western Stima in Kisumu may have done little to stop K’Ogallo’s charge towards the league title but it signs emerged of the Gor Mahia players looking tired. The team was playing it’s 6th match in 11 days and this season has played in the CAF Confederations Cup, the Sportpesa Super Cup, and the SportPesa shield.

The players are human and after such a hectic schedule, fatigue naturally creeps in their bodies. How the cope with that will be interesting to see in the coming weeks especially considering that Dennis Oliech suffered a season ending injury in the same match.

Can AFC Leopards recover?

AFC Leopards were on a good run of form before they were put back in their shell by Mathare United in Bukhungu on Sunday. Ingwe usually takes a while to recover after a loss but will need to do so quickly this time around as the league is more competitive this season.

With the likes of David ‘Cheche’ Ochieng and Paul Were in their ranks, Leopard have the quality and experience to cope with the loss, will they prove it that this was just a minor blip?
