Vihiga United earned a a 2-1 victory over Chemelil Sugar in a Kenya Premier League match played in Kakamega.

Patrick Okullo’s volley narrowly missing the target as Alube Morgan looked well-beaten in goal. Chemelil mustered their first attempt in the 15th minute when Wangulu Gilbert’s bicycle kick came close after a well-struck cross from Adeyefa Junior.

The Millers grabbed the lead in the 37th minute when Vincent Mahiga guided a powerful header that beat Elvis Opiyo in goal to ripple the back of the net from a Nicholas Akoko cross as Chemelil went into the half time break leading 1-0.

Vihiga United came back strong in the closing half after a lethargic first half and got straight into the thick of things but Edmond Maunda squandered an opportunity in the opening minutes of the second half.

Sammy Okoth’s men deservedly pulled one goal back seven minutes after the hour mark courtesy of Victor Adema and they were awarded a contentious penalty in the 79th minute after James Omino brought down Patrick Okullo and the skipper stepped up to take his earned penalty and held his nerve to ensure all three points remained with Vihiga.

The win hands takes Vihiga to just a point adrift from relegation places with their next clash coming against Bandari at home while Chemelil will face a tough task when they face Gor Mahia as they look to pick themselves from the defeat.
