Brendan Rodgers has insisted that there can be no comparison between his Liverpool side that came close to winning the league in 2014 and Jurgen Klopp’s current Reds team.
Liverpool fans are hoping for a helping hand from their former manager when Leicester travel to the Etihad to take on Manchester City on Monday night.
The Reds have been in terrific league form, but are still very much dependent on Manchester City slipping up in their last two league games in order to end their close to three-decade title drought.
Rodgers stressed that his sole focus is on Leicester and not on whether he could help his former side to win the Premier League title this season.
He also believes that there is no comparison between Klopp’s Reds and his Liverpool team that came mightily close to winning the league in 2014.
Rodgers feels the two teams are at completely different stages of their development, as while Klopp has been steadily building up, his Liverpool side unexpectedly challenged for the title with a weaker squad.
Asked if he is thinking about Liverpool going into Monday’s game, the Leicester boss said in a press conference: “Not really. I am employed by Leicester.
“My focus is on Leicester City.”
Rodgers added: “There’s no comparison really.
“Liverpool back then was at a different stage.
“We had young players, loan players. We went from eighth to second in a couple of years so it’s a different dynamic. We deserved to finish second.
“We proved over the course of the season with young players that it is possible, but over 38 games we deserved to finish in second.
“It’s exciting to be involved but my thoughts are solely with Leicester and doing what we can to get a result.”
Liverpool will take on another one of their former managers this weekend when they travel to face Rafael Benitez’s Newcastle United.
