COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli has lashed out Murang’a leaders who are trying to frame him that he insulted the Kikuyu community.

On Sunday, Atwoli said that some people from the Kikuyu Community are washenzi.

“Na nyinyi Wakikuyu wa kisasa, nyinyi ni washenzi sana. Aliyesema Mwai Kibaki tosha alikuwa Raila. Wakaandikana MoU. Raila aliitwa kule Sagana kama Cabinet imekiwhisha akaambiwatake this or leave it.” Atwoli said during a church service on Sunday.

He argued that leaders from the region who were supporting DP William Ruto were creating two centers of power.

This prompted some Murang’a leaders to demand for Atwoli to apologise to the Kikuyu community because he was his statement amounted to insults and were a threat to national cohesion.

“The Agikuyu community does not compromise of people of a lesser god. Mr Atwoli must apologise to the community because failure to do so will be setting a very bad precedence to other people who think they can insult or underrate other communities,”  Murang’s women Rep Sabina Chege said on Tuesday.

But Atwoli has refused to apologise and said that he is more Kikuyu than some of the Kikuyus demanding for an apology.

Speaking during the Labor Day Celebrations at Uhuru Park, he said that he was brought up by a stepmother called Nyambura and his first girlfriend was also a Kikuyu.

‘We want to support the President and eradicate corruption in Kenya. Why are leaders inciting communities?’ he wondered.

Among his closest friends is Moses Kuria, whom he said has always been there for him in thick and thin. He quoted several other Kikuyus whom he has worked.

And ended with ‘Nyinyi ni washenzi!’
