GUTS: Police Boss Defies President, Refuses to Resign

A Police boss has defied the President and refused to resign after the President announced that the head of police had, in fact, tendered his resignation.

What’s more, the President even revealed the Deputy Inspector General of Police to succeed the embattled cop, but he is yet to vacate government office.

Reports emerged that Sri Lanka President Maithripala Sirisena had indicated that Police boss, Pujith Jayasundara had resigned while he had not received his letter.

Chandana Wickramaratne even as the Police chief stayed his ground in the office.

This is after it emerged that Jayasundara had failed to act on intelligence reports as early as April 4 that indicated an imminent terror attack in churches and hotels.

America and India had repeatedly warned Sri Lanka of the attacks but the police failed to act on the intelligence.

In the aftermath of the attacks that occurred on Easter Sunday, some 253 people lost their lives with an additional 500 being seriously injured.

ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack, while the government insists a local rebel organization NTJ helped with the planning and execution of the massacre.

Sri Lanka instituted a dusk-to-dawn curfew that is in place even as authorities race against time to nab the terrorists on the run.

Monday, police arrested the eldest brother of the Ibrahim brothers who are suspected to have been the suicide bombers in Sri Lanka’s high-end hotels.

Police detained Mohamed Yusuf Ibrahim after his sons were implicated in the crimes.

Deputy Minister for Defense even admitted that the government was shocked with the involvement of some of the best-educated youth in the attacks.

President Sirisena has since banned niqab and burqa with the aim of easily identifying suspected masterminds of the Easter Sunday attacks.
