While appearing before the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) for the interview for the position of the Chief Justice, Mr Maraga had vowed never to compromise his religious beliefs to attend to work on a Saturday if he is appointed Chief Justice.

β€œIt would be very difficult for me to sit on a Saturday to hear a case. I would rather talk with my colleagues in the court to accommodate me and exempt me from sitting if the hearing extends to a Saturday,” Justice Maraga told the JSC during the interview in September 2016.

This showed the picture of a man who had strong religious beliefs. CJ Maraga is a staunch SDA member and as such he is always scheduled to worship each and every Saturday.

Today was however different as the President of the Supreme Court of Kenya missed mass to attend the burial of the first son of former President Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi, Jonathan Moi, in Kabarak.

In his speech, Maraga took time to wish Jonathan’s wife, Sylvia Moi and her children all the best as they embark on the journey of life without the presence of Jonathan.

He also pointed out that the Loss of Jonathan Moi will affect people ranging from his close family to siblings differently.

On Wednesday saw Maraga visit former President Daniel Arap Moi at his Kabarak home to give his condolences following the demise of his son, Jonathan Moi.

Apart from Maraga, Deputy President William Ruto, Musalia Mudavadi, Senator Moses Wetangula and Senator James Orengo also attended Jonathan’s final send off.

Jonathan died on April 20 after losing his battle with cancer.
