The Huawei P Smart Z is going to be the first device from the company to feature a pop-up camera as it tries to conquer the camera phone segment. Huawei is usually slow to adopt trendy camera features and as such, this new hardware improvement is a first for the company even with the launch of its photography powerhouses, the Huawei P30 series and the Huawei Mate 20 series.

A lot of companies have resorted to the motorized popup camera in different ways such as the OPPO Find X, OPPO F11 Pro, Vivo NEX S, Energizer phones or the way Samsung has implemented it on the Samsung Galaxy A90 with its rotating pop-up camera.

Huawei is late to this trend even as the pioneering companies are resorting to better hardware as OPPO is reportedly set to feature a “gum stick” (formally a “Pivot Rising Structure”) on the OPPO Reno.

Apart from the odd camera feature, the Huawei P Smart Z is a midrange phone that packs a bezel-less 6.59-inch 2340×1080 screen. The rising camera will host a 16-megapixel camera with an f/2.0 lens. You also get Android Pie running on a Kirin 710 accompanied with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of onboard storage.

Under the hood, you get a 4000mAh battery which should be a standard in 2019. On the rear, you get the main dual 16-megapixel f/1.8 main sensor and a 2-megapixel depth-sensing camera.

Launch details are scarce but it is slated to go for Ksh 21,000.
