Liverpool given boost as injuries pile up for title contenders

Manchester City have this afternoon been dealt a major blow on the injury-front, during their clash with Tottenham.

City in front

The two sides are currently locked in action at the Etihad, in a crucial matchup in the race for both the Premier League title, and a spot in the English top-flight’s top-4.

Today’s outing of course marks the 3rd time that City and Spurs have met over the space of the last 10 days, following the latter’s advancement to the Champions League semi-finals at the expense of the Citizens this week.

It didn’t take long for hosts City to turn the tides, at least temporarily, this afternoon, though.

With just 5 minutes on the clock, a dinked Bernardo Silva ball to the back-post was headed back across goal by Sergio Aguero, before being nodded home by the arriving Phil Foden.

And Pep Guardiola’s men have since headed into the interval with their advantage intact.

De Bruyne crocked

However, an otherwise positive opening 45 minutes for the Sky Blues was dampened somewhat by a potential hammer blow on the injury-front.

Kevin De Bruyne was the player to have picked up the problem, in rather-innocuous circumstances.

After the Belgian international unleashed a wayward strike from the edge of the box shortly before half-time, he quickly pulled up, seemingly with a knee issue.

As such, with De Bruyne having subsequently been forced to limp off, the City faithful now face on anxious wait for an update on the status of their midfield standout, ahead of a season-defining month of fixtures.

De Bruyne was outstanding as City beat Spurs 4-3 in the Champions League on Wednesday with a hat-trick of assists, although the English champions still bowed out on away goals.

However, City’s player of the year last season has been beset by injury problems all campaign.

Twice De Bruyne has come back from lengthy spells on the sidelins with knee ligament injuries suffered in August and November.

City still have four more games.
