Right-back solutions for Manchester United next season

All eyes are on Ashley Young at the moment. Manchester United fans are pointing the majority of the blame in his direction, most of it deserved as his performances haven’t been good enough.

Recently, he has looked like a man out of his depth when going toe-to-toe with the very best. Aged 33, playing out of position no less, it’s tough to ask him to try and stop that star-studded FC Barcelona attack.

The club themselves must front up and take the flak. A lack of investment in that area of the field is coming back to haunt us. Although Young will be at United in the 2019/20 campaign, he shouldn’t be a regular starter.

Matteo Darmian and Antonio Valencia will both leave, while Diogo Dalot has looked better playing further up the field. This surely means United need to bring in a new right-back.

With that in mind, we’ve drawn up a list of three potential suitors; all of whom are currently playing Premier League football this term.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka – Crystal Palace

It’s only right we start with the most talked about. Aaron Wan-Bissaka has been simply sensational for The Eagles this term. Aged just 21, the full-back has shown a maturity way beyond his years, putting in some top-class displays against elite level opposition.

Not only is he great going forward, he’s also a rock at the back. Positionally, Wan-Bissaka rarely puts a foot wrong, while he also has an excellent engine that allows him to get up and down the field all-game. He’d be a stunning acquisition, although the Englishman won’t come cheap…

Ricardo Pereira – Leicester City

Ricardo Pereira of Leicester is a name that isn’t being talked about anywhere near enough. Aged 25, he’d come to United at a great time. The Portuguese would still be learning but he’s already much closer to the finished article than the other two guys on this list.

His greatest asset lies in going forward, and creating opportunities from that right-back position has been a real problem for United under both Solskjaer and Jose Mourinho. Having only joined Leicester last summer, The Foxes would want rewarding handsomely to let him leave.

Timothy Fosu-Mensah – Manchester United/Fulham (loan)

My wildcard pick is already at the club (sort of). Many forget that Timothy Fosu-Mensah was a stunning player when he first broke through into the first-team. Under Jose Mourinho, his opportunities diminished. Solskjaer is yet to see him in the flesh as he has been out on loan at Fulham.

This upcoming pre-season is huge for the young Dutchman and if he can impress under the new regime then I don’t see any reason why Fosu-Mensah cannot make that spot in the team his own. He will have to improve upon performances from this season, though, as he hasn’t been anywhere near good enough.
