Kenyan Policeman with intention of shooting a barmaid shoots barman

A Police constable who stormed a bar with the intention to kill a barmaid in a case of love gone sour mistakenly shot the barman who also worked as a boda-boda rider in Kisii town.

Joseph Mauti had been deployed on guard duties and was armed with an Ak47 riffle allegedly shot and killed Dominic Oyungi at one of the bars in Itumbe Market, Sameta Sub County.

Police-constable David Mauti was charged at the High Court with the murder last Thursday night of 34-year-old Dominic Oyugi.

The accused denied the charge and was released on a Sh500,000 bond with a surety of a similar amount.

Judge David Majanja ordered him to report to Sameta Police Station every two weeks until the case is determined.

At the time, Kisii County Commander Martin Kibet said Mr Mauti had asked for permission to go for supper before the crime took place.

He was based at Itumbe police station. Mr Oyugi’s body was taken to the morgue at Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital.

The case will be mentioned on May 6, 2019.
