Huduma Confusion Continues as State House Disown SIM Card Deregistration Directive

News that the Communication Authority of Kenya (CA) was out to block SIM cards belonging to Kenyans who failed to register for the Huduma Namba once the entire process is complete was met with mixed reactions among Kenyans.

Many Kenyans argued that it was out of order for CA to arm twist Kenyans into registering for something some of them were not even sure of in the first place.

The authority’s Director-General Francis Wangusi said Thursday Huduma IDs will now be used as the official government identification number that will replace the current National IDs which Kenyans used to register SIM cards.

“Once the 45 day registration exercise is over, we shall engage mobile operators on the process to switch off the SIM cards,” Mr Wangusi said in an interview with the Nation.

State House has now come out to set the record straight with Chief of Staff Nzioka Waita saying that no directive has been issued to have SIM Cards blocked.

Mr. Waita has said that Huduma Number Registration is a Voluntary process and as such, no Kenyan will be forced to take part in it.

“For the avoidance of doubt Huduma Number Registration is a voluntary excercise in compliance with the ruling of the Courts. There is no directive from the Government to institute any punitive measures against those who don’t register.More emphasis will be laid on civic education!” Said State house Chief of Staff Nzioka Waita
