Determined to maintain a high quality of education for Kenya’s youth, Education Cabinet Secretary Professor George Magoha has warned University vice-chancellors against creating new programs as revenue streams for the institutions and remain irrelevant to the economy.

Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology has emerged as the most preferred University at the just-released placement for the first year students for the second year in a row.

Jomo Kenyatta College of Agriculture and Technology finally became a fully-fledged university in 1994 and inaugurated on 7th December 1994. The institution is especially known for its Engineering and tech-related courses.

As 2018 KCSE candidates make thier way into instutitions of higher learning, the education sector has diversified with the introduction of TVET centers to cater for the many who did not attain grades acceptable for university placement.

With heavy regulation on universities and colleges, the Education Ministry is keen to streamline higher education as well as the overall examination processes at all levels of education.

New programs will be highly analyzed before being made available to the public. “Speaking while launching the Universities and Colleges Placement Results at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa, Magoha said funding for universities will strictly be based on performance.

“Why are universities introducing some very funny and irrelevant courses which only attract 2 to 5 students? We cannot continue like this and I want to put it clear that when you come to me asking for funding, I will first ask you to show me what you have done.”

Placement results are set to be made public on May 1st, 2019.
