United Legend Defends Phil Jones From Critics Over Messi’s Torment

Manchester Unites saw a nightmare at Camp Nou during their second leg quarter-finals against Barcelona.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side actually started the evening pretty brightly, and hit the crossbar in the opening minute through Marcus Rashford.

But soon reality took over, and United were pinned back by a Barca side scenting blood and determined to build on the 1-0 first leg advantage they held from their game at Old Trafford.

Typically, it was Lionel Messi who led the fight.

First, Messi brilliantly beat both Ashley Young and Fred before effortlessly sweeping home a shot from the edge of the box, and then the Barca genius was indebted to an horrendous error from David de Gea who allowed his effort from distance to squirm in.

Philippe Coutinho made it 3-0 with a fine effort from distance, but the damage had already been done by then.

And one moment before the break seemed to sum the game up.

Messi span away from Phil Jones – who started the match wearing a bandage on his head following a weekend injury – and then twisted and turned his way past the defender, also nutmegging him.

Speaking at half-time, BT Sport presenter Gary Lineker said: “He turned Phil Jones inside out so many times here that his bandage loosened.”

Ex-United defender Rio Ferdinand then added: “You’re out of order! You’re out of order!

“This is what we came to see. Any fan who’s come here today you’ve come to see things like this from Messi.

“Sometimes you’ve just got to say he’s too good.”
