Barcelona will take a 1-0 lead back to the Nou Camp next Tuesday after Luis Suarez’s header went in off the arm of United defender Luke Shaw.

The goal was originally ruled out after an offside call, until a VAR review overturned the decision.

After going ahead, Barcelona dominated the game with 67 per-cent possession, though ultimately settled for just a one-goal advantage rather than press for more away goals.

They were made to survive a few scares, however, as Marcus Rashford’s free-kick whistled past the post and Diego Dalot spurned a good chance by firing his header over the bar.

Barcelona’s patient build-up play was clearly frustrating for the hosts, who saw three players yellow carded.

Despite the impressive result, Pique was insistent that only half of the tie had been played, and warned his side not to fall victim to a famous United comeback like PSG did.

In the previous round, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side overturned a 2-0 home defeat at the Parc des Princes to knock out the Parisians on away goals with a 3-1 win in the return tie.

“After seeing what they did against PSG there’s no reason at all to believe the tie is over,” Pique told reporters.

“PSG were the clear favourites then, they played far better and look what happened.

“Anything can happen in football, so we’ll have to focus very hard.”

The centre-back was still confident of his side’s chances, and praised the way Barca set up at Old Trafford.

“We put in an excellent performance defensively, we’re in our best form in defence of the season,” he continued.

“The early goal relaxed us and we knew how to cope with the situation, the fact we didn’t concede helps us a lot.

“It’s very difficult to come here, it’s an historical ground, there’s a sensational atmosphere and you get put under a lot of pressure.”
